Association Information
Association Activity : THE Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade, representing the oil trade in the country, has called for an appropriate shift in favour of oilseeds cultivation to drive the country towards self-sufficiency. This would mean a well-considered policy package addressing region-specific potential for increase in oilseeds production. The President of COOIT, Mr Sandeep Bajoria, said, our buffer stocks of foodgrains are bulging but our indigenous production of oilseeds is insufficient to meet our growing edible oil requirements. Though oilseeds production registered a remarkable recovery in 2003-2004 to reach about 25 million tonnes, however, erratic monsoons this year have been causing concern. Addressing members of the oilseeds industry and trade at the 42nd All-India Convention of Oilseeds, Oil Trade and Industry, Mr Bajoria said that the proposed vision document to be prepared and submitted in next six months by COOIT would seek to increase the overall output of oilseeds from about 6-7 million tonnes to about 10 million tonnes in next two years. "Strategic initiatives are necessary to create an appropriate framework to impart robustness and vibrancy in edible oilseeds and edible oils sector. Recent increase in the minimum support price of oilseeds have, to some extent, improved parities amongst competing crops and it is hoped that tangible results in crop diversification to oilseeds would be achieved, he explained. For augmenting indigenous supplies of vegetable oils, Mr Bajoria said, It is necessary that the potential of vegetable oils from non-conventional sources is fully exploited. As against potential of 27 lakh tonnes, barely 13 lakh tonnes is being exploited. This means increased focus on rice bran, cottonseeds and tree borne oilseeds. The COOIT has reiterated that India should guard against Singapore becoming an easy route for imports of edible oil and related products at zero duty as Singapore is not an edible oilseeds producing country. Strict compliance with Rules of Origin has been strongly represented in the case of Sri Lanka, Mr Bajoria said. Earlier, the State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, while assuring the oilseeds industry of necessary support, called upon them to stick to tax compliance as available data from the Commercial Taxes Department indicates tax avoidance. The State Government has identified soyabean as a major thrust area and proposes to increase its acreage across several districts in the State. While soyabean cultivation would go up in a few districts, focus is also on consolidating oil palm cultivation. As against total oil palm cultivation of about 80,000 hectares, the State accounts for about 50,000 hectares.
